A Friend to the End

This is one of my favorite pieces I have written so far. This is dedicated to anyone who has lost someone close to them.

I visit you daily and think of what was,

The marble of your home stands solid before me,

The inscription of dates always reminds me of that fateful day,

And though I could never forget,

Each time I visit,

I always am aware of your birthday,

I’m never alone yet I bring no one,

You cannot hear me though I know you are listening,

You can’t see me yet I know you are watching,

You aren’t here but you are never gone,

For the bond of friendship is not broken,

Even in death…

  1. “The marble” is representative of the deceased’s permanent home in the form of a mausoleum. “The inscription of dates always reminds me of that fateful day” references the deceased’s date of passing thus “fateful day”. It also foreshadows the later line “I am always aware of your birthday” because the the individual’s birth date is also inscribed on the marble.
