Versatile Blogger Award

I was recently nominated for the Versatile Blogger Award by Malvika Shanker. I’m always honored to be recognized – so thank you very much Malvika for recognizing my blog and writings.

wpid-2015-05-23-16-13-56.pngWhat an awesome trophy. Before I typed this out, I actually held the trophy over my head for about five minutes in celebration. Then I kissed it a few times cause that’s what the NHL guys do. Then I filled it with Gulden Draak, cause, like Daniel LaRusso from The Karate Kid, it is the best. I drank a few sips from the trophy to celebrate this momentous occasion. (Also, I may or may not have..okay I did…picture Elisabeth Shue cheering me on.)

Gulden-Draak-2

Gulden Draak, cause we all like dragons, and we all like good beer. Good for a celebration or just about any occasion.

I would have taken a picture of this feat to show all of my loyal readers, but I only have two hands. Plus, I couldn’t find anyone to take the picture (aka I didn’t look for anyone cause I didn’t want to share my beer), and with the Gulden Draak being at a whopping 10.5% alcohol content, I decided trying to go the down the stairs might be bad – for the trophy and me.

Okay, well anyways…on to better things!

You are the best Jarrod! Thank you Elizabeth!

You are the best Jarrod!
Thank you Elisabeth!

Okay, as Rebbit can tell you, I play by my own rules and usually go off the board when it comes to awards. I have been asked to tell you seven things about me. So here we go:

1. Gulden Draak is my favorite beer.

Okay, party foul! You already knew that. Let’s start over:

1. I am a Taurus and I wear it well.

2. I love jigsaw puzzles.

3. I love taking a drive through the countryside but gas prices have unfortunately phased this out for me.

4. The most expensive item I own is the paper that my Masters Degree is printed on.

5. Your mother knows more about current pop culture than I do.

6. I got rid of cable television in January 2014 and haven’t regretted it for a single moment.

7. I don’t know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop and since I don’t eat sweets, I don’t care either.

Okay, well hopefully you learned a few new things about me. Thanks for reading!

Real Neat Blog Award

I was recently nominated by Amanda Lyle for the Real Neat Blog Award in the “Newbie Category.” The event Amanda put on was star studded, to say the least, and I was honored to attend and walk the red carpet. I was also very proud to have Jessica Rabbit as my escort for the night.

It was great to make the cut and be nominated in one of the many categories that awards were presented for that night.

Real Neat Blog Award

As part of my acceptance of this award, I am required to answer seven questions. Get ready Rebbit, here they come! As you might be aware, I don’t follow the rules to the full scope.

In a particular order, cause that’s the way they were presented to me, they are the following:

1. When was the happiest moment of your life?

I’m going to cheat on this one. I am not going to pick a single moment but let’s say, a certain situation that is repeating. About 3-4 years ago, I decided to seek counseling to work to deal with my feelings on a number of events that happened in my life as well as an anger management problem. I was proud that I took the necessary steps to realize I wasn’t the person I knew I could be, I had an issue, and that I could work to improve things. I worked hard to put myself into a different mindset and change some things about me that were unhealthy. I was going down a bad path and I didn’t like it. Having an anger management issue is like being a drug addict or an alcoholic – it never goes away – but with some new life tools and an ability to understand the source and alternate means to deal with your anger, it can be controlled. It was difficult to face some of my demons and a number of sessions brought me to tears but I didn’t quit and I persevered cause I believed that I could change.

Since that time, I have found myself in similar situations as I was before my counseling and self improvement. Before that time, I made very poor decisions. Now, I make much better decisions. It feels so good to know that I improved in my decision making and it creates a positive feedback loop for me.

2. Do you believe in ghosts, and if so, what experiences have you encountered?

Eh, this is going to be vague. I don’t believe in all knowing supreme entities and I don’t believe in an afterlife. That said, I often wonder if there are some sorts of energy that are left over after we physically pass. I don’t know. I haven’t seen any real evidence to point me in that direction. Romantically, I’d like to believe, but I also think to be fair, I would need to believe in some sort of afterlife to accompany this. Believing in one, without the other, makes no sense to me.

3. What’s your favorite Season and why?

Well, I really liked the 4th season of Seinfeld…oh..wait…okay. I would say Spring because the weather begins to warm and I can begin to get outside more to run and workout. Mother Nature awakens and comes alive and I feel reinvigorated seeing that.

4. What’s your favorite thing about blogging?

It gives me an outlet to write about my thoughts and feelings which allows me to sort through them and move past them. I used to internalize everything and that got me into deep trouble. I would advise that no one do that but instead find positive avenues to express your feelings, especially the negative ones.  I’ve also enjoyed meeting so many wonderful people. I didn’t have any expectations when I first started my blog so making so many new friends has been a real treat.

5. If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

Well I am a Homo sapien and that is part of the Animalia Kingdom so aren’t I an animal? Okay, science humor. I guess fitting my personality, I would say a domestic house cat. They tend to be very clean and also tend to keep to themselves which is fitting to me.

6. What’s your guilty pleasure?

I feel like a lot of things that used to be guilty pleasures are now considered vogue. Hmm. I was really into professional wrestling as a kid so I probably know more about late 70s through 90s professional wrestling than anyone you have ever known. I also am really into heavy metal and l likely know more about random heavy metal trivia and facts than anyone you have met, especially when it comes to 1980s hair metal bands. On a side note, besides my extreme knowledge of professional wrestling and heavy metal, I can also get a knot out of anything – I mean it – literally anything. Yet, I haven’t found a means to make money off of any of these unique skill sets so if you are in need, I can work cheaply.

7. How many hours do you need to sleep each night to function optimally?

I need about 10 hours but I usually get around 5. Part of that is I stay up late and the other part is I usually lie awake in bed for hours, unable to sleep.

I’d like to thank Amanda for nominating me and readers, I hope you had fun with my answers!

Versatile Blogger Award

versatile-bloggerI was recently nominated for the Versatile Blogger Award on April 23rd by the Spirit Keeper! I’d like to thank The Spirit Keeper for nominating me and recognizing my blog. There are so many talented writers out there and so many wonderful blogs, I am always humbled to be recognized, especially by the talented writers that have nominated me for these awards.

I’d invite everyone to check out The Spirit Keeper’s blog as it is probably one of the most diverse and thought provoking blogs I follow.

I usually don’t follow the rules of the nomination but I make up my own rules. I love that The Spirit Keeper routinely posts inspirational and thought-provoking quotes. I would encourage each of my followers to type “Quote” into the Word Press Reader search engine and find a new blog to follow based upon that search.

But, I had a request from Rebbit7 to please answer the questions so, Rebbit7, I’m answering the questions, just for you (but everyone else can read them, if you want).

1. Tell us something about yourself stating a) your country of origin b) likes & dislikes c) school where you studied

A. I am originally from Savannah, Georgia, but grew up in Louisiana within the United States. I have been all over the United States but only outside of it once. When I was two or three, my family went to Quebec in Canada. The only thing I remember about the trip was my father attempting to place an order at a McDonald’s and the cashiers speaking French and not being able to readily understand his English, thus his increasing frustration. While I can appreciate different cultures, unlike about 99.995% of the people I encounter in life (I’ve done the math), I don’t have a desire to travel the world and see other places. If it happens, great. If not, great too. I guess my goals in life are different.

B. Likes: Lifting weights, Running, Music, Good Wine and Beer, Chimenea, Cars, Poetry, Iced Tea, Discussion, Alone Time, Independence, Goals, Jigsaw Puzzles, Sunsets, My Ipod, Beautiful Women

Dislikes: Laziness, Cheap Beer and Wine, Arguing, Liars, Cold Weather, Selfishness, Getting up in the Morning, Complainers (Negative Nancys, Debbie Downers, Jane Complains), Excuses, Betrayal

C. I have a Bachelors of Science in Biology with a concentration in Cell and Molecular Biology and a Minor in Chemistry from Louisiana Tech University. I graduated Magna Cum Laude and from the Honors Program.

I also earned a Masters of Science in Forensic Science with a concentration in Forensic Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University.

I’m very proud of my academic achievements. I sacrificed greatly to earn those degrees.

2. Share some facts of life leading to your blogging or what made you blog?

I’ve written about this very subject in great detail in my post entitled “Why the Blog?” and “Poetry.” I’d encourage you to read them if you are interested. Basically, my divorce spurred my writing and the divorce, spurred with some other major life changes within an 18 month period, inspired me to start my blog.

3. In your opinion, is blogging worth your time spent? Explain or expand your answer.

Blogging has brought me more joy and happiness than I could have ever imagined. When I started this process, I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to go. I know I did want to share some of my poetry but I was kind of afraid at first -afraid to open that part of myself to the world. My experiences in blogging have been very positive. I’ve met so many wonderful people. It is amazing how cruel people can be that you find in the “real world” and how total strangers on the internet can be so encouraging, supportive, and inspirational. To each of you, I say thank you. You have inspired me to see there are others out there that have had similar journeys and tribulations as I have had in life. We aren’t alone – even when we think we are. As I have felt more comfortable in writing, I have been inspired to test the limits of my writing and share more.

I’m proud to say I’ve met people that I call true friends. Not internet friends – but real friends.

Real Neat Blog Award

real-neat-blog-award-first-award-of-2015

I was recently nominated by Ginny for the Real Neat Blog Award. I’d like to thank her for nominating me and recognizing my blog. I’m truly honored.

As I have discussed with other award nominations, I’m going to abstain from the following the rules. I prefer to break the rules. Even when I make the rules, I still break them! 🙂

Anyways, I’d ask all of my followers to check out Ginny’s blog and being that this is the Real Neat Blog Award, I challenge all of you to something else! I really enjoy following a number of wonderful photography blogs. I challenge each of you to enter “Photography” into the WordPress Reader and find a “Real Neat” photograph to “like.”

Are you up to the challenge?

Creative Blogger Award

creative blogger

I’d like to thank Blair of People, Things, and Life for nominating me for the Creative Blogger Award. It is always nice to be recognized by one of your peers for your efforts. I’ve gone away from following the rules of these awards and will continue to do so, but I wanted to thank Blair for nominating me.

Since I am not very good at talking about myself, I’d like to challenge each of my readers. Please check out Blair’s blog. Besides being an amazing writer, she is a wonderful young lady with a big heart. Also, I would challenge each of you to go to the WordPress Reader and put in a tag of “Poem” or “Poetry” and find a new blogger you aren’t familiar with that produces quality work and follow them. Let’s continue to be supportive of our fellow writers and look for undiscovered talents!
